Hildewintera colademononis (Monkey Tail Cactus) is a playful, trailing cactus known for its long, cascading stems covered in soft, white, hair-like spines. As it matures, the fuzzy stems can grow several feet long, draping beautifully over the edges of hanging planters. Despite its wild, shaggy appearance, the spines are relatively soft to the touch, giving the plant its signature “monkey tail” look and making it a standout in any cactus collection.

Light : Prefers bright light to full sun. Indoors, place near a sunny window; outdoors, it thrives in bright conditions with some protection from intense afternoon sun.
Water : Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away. Reduce watering during cooler months when growth slows.
Soil : Requires a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding extra perlite or sand helps prevent root rot.
Bloom : Produces large, vibrant red to magenta blooms that emerge from the sides of mature stems. Flowers are especially striking against the soft, white “fur.”
Propagation : Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cut ends to callous before placing in dry, well-draining soil to root.
Fun Fact : Despite its soft, furry appearance, the “hair” covering this cactus actually helps protect it from intense sun and temperature swings in its native mountainous habitat.
