String of Tears (Senecio herreianus or Curio herreianus)

String of Tears, Senecio herreianusis, is  a charming trailing succulent with plump, tear-shaped leaves arranged along long, delicate stems. Its bead-like leaves are designed to store water, making this an excellent choice for a hanging planter or a spot where its trailing stems can spill over the edge.

FUN FACT: Those little “tears” aren't just cute—they are specially shaped to reduce the amount of leaf surface exposed to the sun, helping the plant conserve water. Each translucent leaf can even develop a tiny window that allows light to reach deeper into the leaf!

LIGHT: Bright, indirect light is best. A few hours of gentle morning sun can encourage fuller growth, but avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.

WATER: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. When you water, soak thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Overwatering is the most common problem with String of Tears.

SOIL: Use a very well-draining succulent or cactus soil. Adding extra perlite or pumice can improve drainage and help prevent the roots from staying too wet.

BLOOM: Mature plants may produce small, white flowers with a cinnamon-like fragrance. Blooms are most likely when the plant receives plenty of bright light.

PROPAGATION: Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Lay a section of stem across moist, well-draining soil and gently press the nodes against the surface. Roots will develop from the nodes and new growth will follow.
